I always get confused between the different terms for parts of a compound leaf so I have attempted to draw them out as an aide memoire

1 pinnate blade with entire pinna on rachis

1 pinnate A trichomanes

A trichomanes is a good example of a pinnate blade, with each leaflet a pinna.

IMG_5985

2 pinnate blade where pinna consists of pinnules. or deeply pinnatifid

Each pinna is now sub divided so that each leaflet is now a pinnule. e.g. Polystichum setiferum Soft Shield fern

3 pinnate where each pinna further sub divided

D dilitata Is this 2 pinnate with pinnatifid pinnules?

e.g. Pteridium aquilinum and D dilitata has 2-3 pinnate blade
